We drove 35 miles northeast from Alamosa, CO to this national park which is very different from any other. The mountainous sand dunes are the tallest dunes in North America, the highest dune rises to around 750 feet. The mountainous dunes are the main attraction but they are only 11% of a 330 square mile deposit of sand. Most of the sand deposit is not recognizable as such because it is covered in grass and shrubs.
It's difficult to photograph these dunes, many of the shots don't capture the height and complexity. We hiked and climbed around 3 miles total. It was difficult. 95% of the time your shoes are sinking 5 inches into the sand. The day was cloudy with one small shower but the sun made an appearance at times.
