One word for Amarillo - WINDY. This city sits on a plateau and has the highest elevation of any city in Texas at 3600 feet. We stayed for a week at the Oasis RV Resort which is in a field not close to much of anything except the famous Cadillac Ranch, a Route 66 roadside attraction. It's also in the middle of a farmer's field.
We ran in a nice park a few times, biked on a rail trail and found some nice restaurants. We also visited the Cadillac Ranch. The main reason for our visit was Palo Duro Canyon State Park which is 25 miles south of Amarillo. This canyon is second in size only to that other canyon in Arizona. We spent an afternoon in Palo Duro hiking the trails.
I'm writing this from Durango, Colorado. In retrospect, a week in Amarillo was a little too long.
No mountains, rivers or lakes. A lot of wind. The RV resort was nice but basically a parking lot. We'll hopefully get a look at the more southern parts of Texas on another trip.
